Story Highlights:

Sanjay Manjrekar questioned Shubman Gill's aggression in Lord's Test

Manjrekar compared Gill's aggressive side to Virat Kohli

India captain Shubmanb Gill showcased his aggressive side for the first time in international cricket during the third Test of the five-match series against England at Lord's. The 25-year-old was involved in heated exchanges with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett during the match. He even had an argument with the umpire after he was unhappy with the new ball that had been provided to the team.

However, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar wasn't a big fan of Gill's 'fiery side'. He also felt that the Indian captain's verbal exchange with England players affected his batting performance in the game. Despite coming into the match at Lord's after posting three-digit scores in both the innings of the second Test, the 25-year-old recorded scores of 16 and 6 in the first and second innings respectively at Lord's.

Manjrekar compared Gill's fiery side to that of Kohli

Manjrekar also made a comparison between Gill and Virat Kohli's aggressive side, claiming that the latter would become an even better batter after getting fired up, but the complete opposite ended up happening with the former.

“The thing with Virat Kohli was that he would get even more fired up and become a better batter [if things got nasty]. What disappointed me with Shubman Gill — and that's why I was wondering, where is Shubman Gill heading? — because that seemed like it didn't have the right effect on Shubman Gill the batter," Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo's Match Day.

"If Shubman Gill had that kind of a fiery side to him, we would have seen it a little earlier. You don't have to show it when you're captain. Or did he show it because he's got this confidence now that he's won a Test match and scored so many runs? Because with Virat Kohli, you could see he was ready for a scrap. He was always looking to get into the thick of things, even before he was captain. That was a trait we saw early on. With Shubman Gill, I've never seen it before," he added.

Meanwhile, India currently trail the series against England by 2-1 heading into the fourth Test in Manchester that is set to commence from July 23. It is highly important for Shubman Gill & Co. to record a victory in the upcoming match as any other result will end their chances of triumphing the series. Moreover, if the Three Lions manage to come out victorious at Old Trafford, then they will seal the series even before playing the fifth and final Test.
