Right before the start of the England tour, India Test captain Shubman Gill said that he wants to be the best batter in the five-match series. Gill is walking the talk and has been doing exactly the same for Team India. He followed up his first Test century with a record-breaking double ton in the ongoing second match against England which is being played at Edgbaston in Birmingham. He didn't stop there, as he went on to play another robust knock and cracked an unbeaten fifty in the second innings in a bid to hand England a mammoth total to chase in the second Test.
Shubman Gill busts Virat Kohli's massive record
Following Rohit Sharma's announcement of his retirement from Test cricket, the spotlight turned towards the talented young batsman, Shubman Gill, who was entrusted with the captaincy of the Indian team. However, Gill's journey as captain began under scrutiny, with several critics questioning his form, particularly in challenging overseas conditions prevalent in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries.
Nevertheless, as the Test series against England commenced, the 25-year-old delivered a resounding response to his doubters through his performance with the bat.
In the very first Test match of the series, held at Headingley, Gill made a powerful statement. The newly appointed skipper emphatically rediscovered his form and silenced his critics by scoring a magnificent 147 runs in the first innings. This remarkable knock made him only the fifth Indian cricketer to achieve a century on his debut as Test captain, placing him alongside legendary figures such as Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar.
Adding further to his accomplishments, Gill went on to smash a brilliant double century at Edgbaston in the second Test match in Birmingham. Resuming the second day of play with an unbeaten score of 114, the young captain continued his dominant performance, ultimately reaching his maiden double century in the longer format of the game.
While the runs flowed consistently from his bat, the star batter also etched his name in the record books. During the second innings of the same Edgbaston Test, he achieved another milestone by surpassing the record for the most runs scored by an Indian captain in their debut Test series. This record was previously held by Virat Kohli, who is considered Gill's idol in the cricketing world.
