On a rain-affected opening day of the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, India reached 204 for 6 by stumps, thanks to a determined partnership between Karun Nair and Washington Sundar.

Nair was unbeaten on 52, while Sundar was holding firm on 19 as the two guided India to a more stable position after early trouble. Only 64 overs were possible on Thursday due to several rain interruptions, but India made good use of the extended final session, adding 119 runs for the loss of three wickets in 35 overs.

The day started under gloomy skies, and England struck early. Gus Atkinson removed Yashasvi Jaiswal for just 2 runs in the morning session, trapping him LBW. England also got the big wicket of KL Rahul, who had looked solid before falling for 14.

Rain forced an early lunch, and when play resumed, India were 72 for 2. But things went downhill quickly as captain Shubman Gill ran himself out for 21, adding only six more runs to his score before the mix-up. Only six overs were bowled in the second session due to more rain and a wet outfield, and tea was taken soon after.

Despite the frustrating interruptions and the loss of key wickets, Karun Nair showed patience and skill to bring up a well-earned half-century, helping India recover from a shaky position. He found a reliable partner in Washington Sundar, and together they ensured India ended the day on a positive note.

Brief Scores: India 204 for 6 in 64 overs (Karun Nair 52 not out, Sai Sudharsan 38, Shubman Gill 21; Josh Tongue 2/47, Gus Atkinson 2/31).
