Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the technical flaw that is present in Yashasvi Jaiswal's game after the latter got dismissed for just two runs in the fifth Test against England. Despite the batter scoring a half-century in the fourth Test, he hasn;t really looked in great touch since his knock of 87 inIndia's first innings of the second Test. The returning Gus Atkinson managed to get the 23-year-old's wicket for cheap at The Oval on Thursday as the visitors got off to a horrendous start.
Gavaskar pointed out that Jaiswal front-foot movement hasn't been the same in the past few matches and added that the young batter doesn't look very confident when on the crease. He further stated that someone from the team needs to sit with the youngster and work on his batting technique.
"There's a bit of uncertainty and maybe a lack of confidence creeping into Jaiswal's game. After scoring a hundred in the first Test, he hasn’t looked very fluent," Gavaskar said on Sony Sports.
“That’s possibly why he's not getting his front foot far enough forward to smother this return. But he's a good player. I think if someone sits with him and works on a few technical aspects—like getting his front foot forward and not opening up his shoulder too much—it could help," he added.
“Right now, his back shoulder is going towards first or second slip, which makes it hard for the bat to come down straight. If his shoulder stayed more towards the wicketkeeper and first slip, the bat would come down straighter," he further added.
Jaiswal's record in the series so far
Jaiswal has so far scored 293 runs in nine innings against England in the ongoing Test series. The left-hander has hit two fifties and a century, maintaining an average of 32.55. Though these numbers aren't poor by any means for an overseas series, the expectations from Jaiswal are far bigger than what he is currently delivering. It remains to be seen if he will be able to play a big knock in the final inning of the series.
Meanwhile, India wrapped up the first day of fifth Test on 204/6 with Karun Nair unbeaten on 52 and Washington Sundar batting on 19. The duo provided some much-needed stability to the Men in Blue with their valiant stand of 51 and they will be looking to add many runs to their tally as the action resumes on Day 2. On the other hand, England have been great in the bowling department so far in the match and will be trying to take India's remaining wickets for cheap on the second day.
