India notched up a historic 336-run win against England by 336 runs in the second Test match held in Birmingham. This victory ended India's 58-year-long wait for their first win at Edgbaston, and it also brought the five-match series to a 1-1 draw. Remarkably, this was India's first triumph against England at this ground since 1967. Prior to this match, out of the eight Test matches played at Edgbaston, India had suffered defeats in seven and managed only one draw back in 1986.
The victory was largely built on the exceptional performance of Akash Deep, who took six wickets in England's second innings, restricting them to 271 after India had set a formidable target of 608 runs. Shubman Gill, Akash Deep, and Mohammed Siraj proved to be the match winners for India. Gill played a crucial role by scoring a magnificent double century (269) in the first innings, helping India reach a substantial total of 587. He followed this up with another century (161) in the second innings, after which India declared their innings at 427/6, setting England a daunting target that Ben Stokes' team ultimately failed to achieve. Akash Deep's contribution was immense, as he took a total of 10 wickets in the match. Siraj's role took was instrumental in India's win, who took a fantastic six-wicket haul in the first innings, dismissing England for 407.
This historic win also marked Shubman Gill's first victory as the captain of the Indian Test team.
Shubman Gill has a message for Ben Stokes after India rock England in 2nd Test
Meanwhile, right after the win India's Test captain made it clear to Ben Stokes' England that every match won't be like Headingley Test. Notably, India suffered a five-wicket defeat in the first Test against England.
"All the things we spoke about after the last game, we were spot on with all of those things. I think the way we came back with our bowling and fielding was tremendous to see. On this kind of wicket we knew that if we got 400-500 runs, it would be enough. Not every game will be like Headingley," Shubman Gill said in the post match presentation.
Meanwhile, Gill was full of praise for Indian bowlers who actually helped India make a comeback in the match.
"[The bowlers] They were magnificent. The way we were able to get through their top order, they bowled brilliantly. Even Prasidh, he didn't get as many wickets but he bowled brilliantly. [On Akash Deep] He hit the right lengths and was getting the ball to move both ways, which was difficult on a pitch like this. He was magnificent for us. I am definitely feeling comfortable with my game and if we are able to win the series with my contributions, it'll be great. As I said before, I want to play as a batsman, and go out as a batsman and make decisions as a batsman. Sometimes you won't take some risks when you're thinking as a captain which you have to do as a batsman," Gill concluded.
The action will now shift to the iconic Lord's stadium, which will stage the third Test between India and England on July 10.
