Former England spinner Monty Panesar slammed Ben Stokes and stated his gesture as 'classless' when he forcefully tried to call a draw during the fourth Test match against India at Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester.
The incident happened during the final session of the fourth Test match when England captain Ben Stokes tried to persuade Ravindra Jadeja to shake hands and call it a draw, but the veteran star refused to do so and went on to smash his second Test ton in England. Washington Sundar, who was batting alongside him, also completed his maiden Test hundred.
The duo stitched an unbeaten 203-run stand that ended England's winning hopes as India were reduced to 222/4 just before lunch in their second innings. Panesar, who represented England in 50 Tests, slammed Ben Stokes and said their rude behaviour is one of the reasons why people hate England.
"Well, it lacked class. It was being, in England, we're being a bit pompous as well, so it didn't reflect good on them as well. They're good ambassadors of cricket, but I suppose you can see the reasons why people hate England because of the way they behave. That was a very classless gesture from Ben Stokes (on handshake controversy)," Panesar told IANS on Tuesday.
As the fourth Test match ended in a draw, England are currently leading 2-1 in the series, and India have the last chance to level the series in London. The fifth Test match will take place from July 31 to August 1 at The Oval.
Team India will be featuring without vice-captain Rishabh Pant because the wicketkeeper batter fractured his ankle during the first day of the fourth Test match. The BCCI also announced his replacement.
On the other hand, England have included Jamie Overton in their squad for the fifth Test match.
England Test Squad: Ben Stokes (Captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
