England has finalised their playing XI for the second T20I against India, scheduled to be played on July 4 at the Old Trafford in Manchester. The team sheet features a couple of notable adjustments from the side that competed in the series opener, including one tactical decision that has raised eyebrows given the player's recent form.

England's playing XI announced for 2nd T20I vs India

Fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue have been brought into the playing XI after being rested during the first match for workload management. To accommodate their return, selectors have sidelined Luke Wood and Saqib Mahmood. The omission of Mahmood has come as a particular surprise, considering he was England's standout bowler in the previous match, where he registered impressive figures of 3/33 from his four overs.

During that opening fixture, Mahmood claimed the crucial wickets of Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, and Tilak Varma. Given his excellent performance, the decision to drop him has been viewed as a shocking gamble by the team management, especially as it clears the way for Tongue to make his international T20 debut in his place.

Archer, Tongue return to English fold

Jofra Archer’s return is poised to provide a massive boost to the squad's bowling attack. The veteran speedster enters the series in sensational form following an outstanding campaign with the Rajasthan Royals in the recent IPL 2026 season, where he spearheaded the franchise's bowling department with 25 wickets, a tally that also ranked as the third-highest in the entire tournament.

The decision to rest Archer for the opening fixture was a precautionary measure by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to manage his workload. Because the T20I series opener kicked off just a couple of days after the conclusion of England's grueling three-Test series against New Zealand, management opted not to risk him. Back in the lineup and fully refreshed, the premier pacer will undoubtedly look to make an immediate impact by hunting for wickets with the new ball.

Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Harry Brook (captain), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer
