India took a 1-0 lead after a six-wicket victory at Edgbaston.

India secured a dominating six wicket win over England in the first ODI of the three game series on Tuesday, July 14 at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham. While chasing a modest target of 259 runs in the second innings, the Men in Blue emerged victorious with 28 balls left in hand.

After the win India skipper Shubman Gill praised the brilliant effort from the lower-order batters to seal the win without any trouble, saying it gives a lot of confidence and the team backs their batting while chasing targets.

"When you see the lower order team finish off like that, it gives you a lot of confidence. It was more about our combination (on wanting to bowl first). We back our batting order to chase," said Gill at the post-match presentation.

While continuing, Gill added that India's bowling during the middle overs was decent but made a strong comeback at the death overs. The team management will try out other combinations to have the best depth in the lineup.

"Our bowling overs in the middle overs was decent. We were put under pressure but we bounced back by taking 5 wickets. We'll try to see which combination gives the best depth. The condition here will be similar to South Africa. The ball was kicking off. If we can test different combinations, it'll be great for us," added Gill.

England's underwhelming batting performance

Winning the toss, England skipper Harry Brook opted to bowl first against the Indian team. However, the decision turned out to be a disastrous one for the Three Lions as the endured a batting collapse in the middle overs. Openers Ben Duckett (43 off 45 balls) and Jacob Bethell (14 off 31) got off to a disappointing start as both of them were dismissed by Gurnoor Brar. However, Joe Root played a stable knock of 76 off 76 deliveries and stitched a crucial partnership with Liam Dowson, who scored 68 off 83 balls.

At the end of the first innings, England was crumbling at 258. From India, Axar Patel emerged as the best bowler, as he finished the game with the figures of 4/62 in 9.5 overs, removing key wickets of the likes of Liam Dowson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Josh Tongue.

India's brilliant performance in the second innings

A brilliant all-round performance from Axar Patel coupled with a commanding knock by Shubman Gill propelled India to a convincing six-wicket victory over England at Edgbaston, securing a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. While the spotlight ahead of the game was firmly fixed on the high-profile returns of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both stalwarts failed to make an impact with the bat, leaving the younger brigade and the lower-middle order to anchor the successful chase.

India’s pursuit of the target was initially cruising on the back of Gill's sublime form, and the opener looked well on course for his 10th ODI century. However, disaster struck when severe leg cramps forced him to retire hurt on 80 runs, abruptly halting his stellar innings. The setback quickly compounded into a genuine middle-order crisis when the set batsmen Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul were dismissed in the exact same over, suddenly leaving the visitors in a precarious position.

Just as the pressure began to mount on the Indian camp, Axar Patel joined forces with Washington Sundar—who had taken the field as Gill's official replacement. Showing immense composure under pressure, both left-handed all-rounders registered gritty, match-winning half-centuries. Their unbroken partnership effectively neutralized the English bowling attack and safely guided India across the finish line to cap off an emphatic win.

Good start for Team India

After claiming a commanding win over the Three Lions, the Shubman Gill-led side will look to prepare themselves to seal the series win in the next game itself. The second ODI of the three-game series on Thursday, July 16 at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
