Gurnoor Brar of India collides with captain Shubman Gill (R) as he catches Jos Buttler during the 1st ODI against England at Edgbaston on July 14, 2026 in Birmingham, England.

Story Highlights:

Shubman Gill missed a chance to score 10th ODI ton as he got retired hurt.

Gurnoor Brar couldn't complete his quota of 10 overs.

India have faced a double injury scare ahead of the second ODI of the series against England. India won the first ODI by six wickets at Edgbaston, Birmingham, but, there are concerns around skipper Shubman Gill and Gurnoor Brar’s fitness. Gill walked off the field retired hurt during the run chase whereas Brar couldn’t bowl the last over his full quota of overs in the ODI.

Brar was expected to bowl the 48th over but he aborted during the run-up. He got the medical attention on the need but could not continue. He walked off the field with an issue with his right calf. Axar Patel bowled the over and wrapped up England's innings with Adil Rashid and Josh Tongue's wickets.

Gill missed out on a well-deserved century. He seemed to have experienced a cramp in his right leg. He got medical attention on the field as well but it did not help. He limped off the field retired hurt for a 75-ball 80. In the post-match press conference, Washington Sundar was asked about Gill's fitness to which he replied, "I have no idea".

If the two players suffered cramps, they can regain fitness for the second ODI of the series at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on July 16. If they don’t, then the team management will have to make a couple of changes.

Who will replace Gill and Brar in 2nd ODI?

If Gill misses out, there is only one change India can make in the batting lineup. Ishan Kishan will walk into the playing eleven. He can open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma. Kishan had scored a blazing 125 in his previous ODI innings against Afghanistan at home while batting in the middle order. He has batted as opener in nine innings in his ODI career, scoring 495 runs, averaging 61.87. It includes a double century against Bangladesh in 2022 and three half-centuries.

If Brar doesn’t recover or is rested as a precautionary measure, India have two options. Kuldeep Yadav is unlikely to play in his place considering the need of all-rounders in the absence of Hardik Pandya. It leaves India with two options – Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav. Arshdeep picked up five wickets in the ODI series against Afghanistan, at 14.40 apiece. Yadav was picked in the ODIs against England as an injured Harshit Rana’s replacement. Arshdeep is likely to get the nod unless India look to try Yadav in overseas conditions in the format.
