Sri Lanka's spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who walked out to bat as nightwatchman on Day 2 of second Test, has been handed a demerit point for a period of 24 months by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Jayasuriya had expressed dissent over the on-field umpire and third umpire's decision. On his way back to the dressing room, he had struck the boundary wedges in frustration.

Jayasuriya admitted to the offence and there was no need for a formal hearing. The sanction was proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft. The Sri Lankan won't have to pay a match fine. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.
Jayasuriya and opener Kamil Mishara were unhappy towards the end of Day 2. They felt the light wasn't adequate to bat. On the last ball of the day's play, Manav Suthar bowled an in-swinging arm-ball that missed Jayasuriya's bat. He reviewed the decision but the on-field umpire's call went against him.
He was visibly unhappy leaving the field. He struck the boundary cushions and then threw his gloves in the dressing room. The Sri Lankan players in the dressing room were also unhappy with the dismissal as Sri Lanka lost a couple of wickets for just eight runs in three overs.
Sri Lanka falter in 1st innings
Early into Day 3's play, Mishara's stay at the crease was short-lived as he fell to Prasidh Krishna's bouncer. Pasindu Sooriyabandara scored 80 after registering a duck as concussion substitute in Galle Test. Sonal Dinusha's half-century took Sri Lanka past 200. At tea break, Sri Lanka were 216/7, trailing by 287 runs. They need 88 more runs to avoid follow-on.
In the first two sessions, Suthar managed just one wicket. He dismissed skipper Dhananjaya de Silva. Krishna added to his tally with Kamindu Mendis' wicket. Ravindra Jadeja ended Sooriyabandara's stay at the crease whereas wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella fell for a three-ball duck to Mohammed Siraj.
