India's 165-run win over Sri Lanka have boosted their WTC final chances

Shubman Gill has also made it clear that WTC final remains his ultimate goal

A commanding 165-run win over Sri Lanka at Galle has breathed new life into India's pursuit of World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 final. Holding a balanced record of five wins, four losses, and a single draw across ten fixtures, the victory solidifies India’s presence in the tournament race, relieving noticeable pressure for team captain Shubman Gill, who branded the hard-fought result as deeply satisfying toward their ultimate championship goals.

Despite the clinical victory, the structure of the WTC standings, which prioritises Points Percentage (PCT) over total accumulated points, keeps India firmly anchored in fifth place. Their updated 53.33 percentage points still leave them trailing the top tier, as heavyweights Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand maintain comfortable leads higher up the ladder.

WTC final is the ultimate goal: Shubman Gill

At the summit, Australia retains the lead with seven wins from nine outings, suffering only minimal damage to their position even after a stunning nine-wicket upset by Bangladesh. Right behind them sit defending champions South Africa in second, holding a strong 75 percentage PCT with three wins in four starts, while third-place Bangladesh rides high at 66.67 percentage points following their historic result against the leaders.

"That (WTC final) is the ultimate goal. Test wins do not come easy and this one is delightful," Gill said at the post-match presentation.

What India need to do to make WTC 2025-2027 final?

An uphill battle awaits India in their quest to reach the WTC final at the Oval, slated for June 9–June 13, 2027. Although mathematical routes remain open across their remaining eight fixtures, historical trends indicate a minimum 60 percent win rate is necessary to secure a spot, leaving little room for error.

The team's qualification blueprint hinges on an aggressive push over the coming months. Starting with the final Test in Sri Lanka, India must immediately pivot to a crucial two-match away series in New Zealand from late November to early December 2026, followed by a heavyweight five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home against Australia in early 2027. To maintain a realistic path to the final, India will likely need to claim victory in at least six of these remaining eight matches.

Navigating this schedule presents a stern test given India's recent struggles on home soil, where they suffered two series defeats over the past two years. While beating Australia will be essential, the upcoming series in New Zealand stands as a make-or-break hurdle; sweeping both Sri Lanka and the Kiwis on the road would provide India with the momentum and percentage points needed to make a genuine push for the final.
