Will Jasprit Bumrah's absence hurt India in Sri Lanka? Here's what captain Shubman Gill said

The Indian cricket team is preparing to launch their two-Test campaign against Sri Lanka, kicking off the opening match on August 15 at the historic Galle International Cricket Stadium. As the visitors build up to the fixture, they face the challenge of competing without their frontline pace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.

Rather than viewing the star bowler's absence as a setback, Indian captain Shubman Gill framed it as a prime opening for another player to make a statement on the big stage. Speaking on the mindset needed in Bumrah's absence, Gill noted

"Jasprit Bumrah is not here but it's an opportunity for someone to step up. It's all about understanding the pace of the game."

Bumrah's ongoing recovery from a left-knee injury prompted the BCCI medical staff to advise extra rest, sidelining the star pacer for the upcoming fixtures. The injury traces back to July 16 during the second ODI against England in Cardiff, where he sustained a field-impact blow that also kept him out of the series finale at Lord's. To manage the condition long-term, Bumrah received a therapeutic knee injection following the tour, with rising pace bowler Auqib Nabi named as his official replacement in the squad for the Sri Lanka series.

Injury concerns also extended to the batting department, as young talent Sai Sudharsan failed to recover in time, prompting the selectors to call up Mumbai’s explosive batter Sarfaraz Khan. Describing the team's cautious approach regarding player fitness, Gill explained,

"There is a constant communication with them. Unfortunately Sai Sudharsan did not improve as much as we liked as we can't take risks in Tests. But we are confident of our 15."

Team India plagued with injuries

The Indian squad enters the Sri Lanka tour severely depleted, with Bumrah, Sudharsan joined on the sidelines by a string of key players, Nitish Reddy, Akash Deep and Washington Sundar, all ruled out due to fitness concerns.

This injury wave leaves Mohammed Siraj to spearhead the seam attack, supported by Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar. Adding further intrigue to the lineup is Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi; if handed his cap during the series, he will make history as the first cricketer from his state to represent the national team. The action gets underway with the opening Test on August 15, followed by the second fixture on August 23.
