While sporting arenas were originally left off the compulsory list in those guidelines, stadium organizers opted to align with the new ceremonial order. The updated protocol had previously debuted on a national scale during the August 15, 2026, Independence Day celebrations, where the full dual-anthem lineup immediately preceded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation.

What does the rule say?

Penned by Chatterjee in the 1870s and originally published within his celebrated Bengali novel Anandamath, the composition holds deep historical significance in the country's freedom struggle. While the Constituent Assembly formally adopted its opening two verses as India's official national song in 1950, Sunday’s fixture saw the extended version take center stage on the cricket field, with players and spectators standing to attention as required by the revised framework.

According to the 10-page directive released by the Home Ministry, whenever the national song and the national anthem (Jana Gana Mana) are featured back-to-back, Vande Mataram must lead off the presentation. The document further instructed spectators to maintain an attentive posture for the duration of the performance, aligning with the Union government's ongoing effort to elevate the prominence of the national song at public events.
