The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly scheduled to finalise and announce the nation's ODI squad for the home series against the West Indies on September 16. As per a PTI report, with Shubman Gill set to lead the side, veteran batter KL Rahul is expected to be appointed as his deputy for the three-match assignment. The series will get underway in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27 before heading to Guwahati for the second fixture on September 30 and concluding in Mullanpur on October 3.
When will India's ODI squad for West Indies series be announced?
Selecting the roster for both the West Indies series and the upcoming Irani Cup will fall on the selection panel headed by Ajit Agarkar, who will convene the meeting just a day after the second T20I against Afghanistan. Notably, this session marks the final scheduled duty of Agarkar’s initial contract period, which formally concludes on October 4. While he remains eligible for a one-year contract extension, the board has yet to reveal its stance regarding his future in the role.

KL Rahul to be India's vice captain in West Indies ODIs
Because the Asian Games clash directly with the West Indies series, standard ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer will be absent from the 50-over squad to captain India's T20 team in Japan. This availability conflict extends to Ishan Kishan as well, opening up a fierce debate over who will secure the backup wicketkeeper spot behind KL Rahul. The decision comes down to Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel, with significant ripple effects for domestic cricket: if Pant misses out on the national ODI roster, he is slated to lead the Rest of India squad against Jammu and Kashmir in the Irani Cup in Srinagar. Conversely, should Pant make the cut, Jurel—fresh off a captaincy stint with India A in Sri Lanka—is expected to assume the Rest of India leadership duties.

Selecting a seam-bowling all-rounder for the series poses another head-scratcher for the selection committee, largely contingent on Hardik Pandya's recovery. Named to the India A squad, Pandya is anticipated to be cleared for white-ball competition starting September 20, according to sources at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Fortunately, the frontline pace department looks far more straightforward, with Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, and Prince Yadav all healthy and ready for selection. To round out the batting order in Iyer's absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad is widely expected to step into the squad.
