Alert for Dream-11 users: Shocking scam unfolds amid IPL 2024 as greed to become 'crorepati' turns distressing

A cricket fan lost Rs 70,000 in an online scam as he wanted to create a virtual team on Dream11 but fraudsters looted him in the name of providing a particular winning slot.

The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is underway, and in the midst of the cash-rich tournament, a shocking development has rocked the Indian fans, particualry those who are indulging in Dream-11. A 24-year-old cricket fan lost Rs 70,000 in an online scam as he wanted to earn money by investing in an online app, Dream-11. The rising trend of fantasy sports platforms like Dream11, which offers lucrative prizes for successful team selections, has its downside as well.

 

The victim played the Dream 11 online game during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The incident took place in Mumbai.

 

As per police reports, accessed by the Indian Express, the victim, who operates a furniture store in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area, was in the process of creating a virtual cricket team on Dream11 on April 6. His friend informed him about an individual on Telegram who could provide the winning team on the platform so that he could earn crore of rupees in return.

 

"When contacted, the individual on Telegram asked him to pay Rs 2000 for a month-long membership during which they would provide him with the winning team. On Monday, the victim made a payment of Rs 2000 for the 'membership' after which the stranger told him to speak to his superior who would call him soon," an officer said.

How did the fraud take place?

 

In the police report, the officers revealed that the stranger contacted the victim and first duped him of Rs 20,000 by luring him with a particular winning slot.

 

The stranger again called him the next day to inform him that a particular slot was booked and demanded another Rs 3,000. The police added that the man shared his Dream11 user ID and password also. As it turned out, the victim was tripped by the culprit of Rs 69,999.

The man realised he had been deceived by fraudsters when they called him to say that he had won Rs 1 crore as promised but for which he will have to make a payment of additional Rs 35,000 as withdrawal charges to transfer the amount.

 

Later, the youth reached the police station and registered a case against fraudsters at the Pant Nagar police station in Ghatkopar.
