With the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England now over, all eyes are on the Men's Ashes, which kicks off on November 21 in Perth. Ahead of the five-match series, former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath has made a bold prediction on the outcome of the series. He expects a 5-0 whitewash, stating that Ben Stokes' England team will struggle to win even a single match in Australia.
Stokes' England side recently failed to defeat a rebuilding Indian team, with the series ending in a 2-2 draw. England has not won a Test series against either India or Australia since 2018, so it's understandable why Pat Cummins' Australian team is considered the clear favorite for the Ashes. The last time England tasted victory in Australia was during the 2010-11 Ashes series. Their performance since then has been poor, with their last series defeat Down Under even leading to Joe Root stepping down as captain, a role that was then taken up by Ben Stokes.
“It's very rare for me to make a prediction, isn't it? And I can't make a different one - 5-0. I'm very confident with our team. When you've got Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon firing in their home conditions, it's going to be pretty tough,” McGrath told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Plus, that track record England have had, it'd be interesting to see if they can win a Test,” he further added.
Stuart Broad hits back at Glenn McGrath's Ashes prediction
Former England pacer Stuart Broad was quick to react to McGrath's prediction, suggesting that the legendary quick could have at least waited until the English team arrived in Australia before making such a bold claim. It's worth noting that McGrath is famous for his 5-0 Ashes predictions and has rarely, if ever, predicted a different outcome for the series between the two arch-rivals in Australia.
“It’s August!! At least let us land, Glenn,” Broad wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The Men's Ashes 2025 will be held across five venues in Australia: Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. The second Test, which takes place at the Gabba, will be a day-night match. The series will wrap up with the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, starting on January 4, 2026.
