Chahal snared a wicket in clash against KKR to maintain his lead on top of the Purple Cap standings.

The race for the coveted IPL 2024 Purple Cap, awarded to the tournament's leading wicket-taker, heats up after high-scoring thriller between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 16. Rajasthan Royals' star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal continued his lead on top of the standings after claiming a wicket against the KKR in his team's winning cause at the Eden Gardens stadium.

Chahal recently snatched the Purple Cap from Jasprit Bumrah, the Mumbai Indians pacer, who had held it briefly. Bumrah had secured the lead on April 10th with a two-wicket haul against the Gujarat Titans. Currently, Bumrah sits in second place behind Chahal. He entered the race in a dominant fashion, grabbing a five-wicket haul against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 11. Chennai Super Kings left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman is tied with Bumrah for second place, both boasting 10 wickets so far. Meanwhile, the high-scoring encounter between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 15 saw SRH skipper Pat Cummins enter the top five contenders. His impressive three-wicket haul propelled him into contention.

Rounding out the top five is Punjab Kings speedster Kagiso Rabada, who is tied with Cummins at nine wickets.

A look at the top five contenders for the purple cap after KKR vs RR's clash:

1. Yuzvendra Chahal (RR): Leading the pack is Rajasthan Royals' star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal with a staggering 12 wickets in just seven matches. Not only is he the leading wicket-taker, but his economy rate of 8.34 is also impressive. Interestingly, Chahal is the only spinner currently challenging for the Purple Cap.

2. Jasprit Bumrah (MI): Mumbai Indians' premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah sits hot on Chahal's heels with 10 wickets in six matches. Bumrah boasts an excellent economy rate of 6.08, showcasing his ability to take wickets while keeping the runs in check.

3. Mustafizur Rahman (CSK): Despite missing a match due to visa formalities, Bangladesh's left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman remains in contention for the Purple Cap with 10 wickets from just five matches for the Chennai Super Kings. However, his economy rate of 9.15 is a bit higher compared to the top two contenders.

4. Pat Cummins (SRH): Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins recently joined the race, grabbing three wickets against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Australian pacer has a total of nine wickets from six matches and maintains a commendable economy rate of 7.87. Notably, Cummins was acquired by SRH at the auction last year for a whopping INR 20.5 Cr and later appointed as their captain.

5. Kagiso Rabada (PBKS): Rounding out the top five is South African speedster Kagiso Rabada of Punjab Kings. Rabada has also taken nine wickets from six matches, boasting a decent economy rate of 7.95. He entered the Purple Cap race with a couple of wickets against Rajasthan Royals on April 13.
