The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will start on March 22 with a marquee clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 22 at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the schedule for first 17 days on February 22. 21 matches will be held from March 22 to April 7 across 10 cities. The schedule for the second phase will be declared later, once the Lok Sabha election schedule is out.
The IPL has empowered batters to play with freedom, hitting shots fearlessly and expressing themselves at the crease. As a result, the player who scores the most runs in a single edition receives an orange cap award following the IPL final.

IPL 2008 Orange Cap Winner: Shaun Marsh
In the first season of the IPL, Shaun Marsh won the Orange Cap while playing for the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). Marsh scored 616 runs in 11 matches with an average of 68.44 and an impressive strike rate of 139.68. He recorded five half-centuries and one century during the IPL 2008.
IPL 2009 Orange Cap Winner: Matthew Hayden
Another Australian batter Matthew Hayden clinched the Orange Cap in 2009. He played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and belted 572 runs in 12 matches. He slammed five fifty with an average of 52 and a strike rate of 144.81.
IPL 2010 Orange Cap Winner: Sachin Tendulkar
Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar clinched the Orange Cap during the 2010 IPL season while captaining the Mumbai Indians. He scored 618 runs in 15 matches and slammed five half-centuries. Tendulkar maintained an average of 47.53 and an impressive strike rate of 132.61 during that IPL season.
IPL 2011 Orange Cap Winner: Chris Gayle
West Indies' Chris Gayle was awarded the Orange Cap in the IPL 2011 season. Gayle played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and smashed 608 runs in 12 matches. He hit three fifty and two tons with an impressive strike rate of 183.13 and an average of 67.55.
IPL 2012 Orange Cap Winner: Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle continued his remarkable form with the bat in 2012 as he won Orange Cap again after scoring 733 runs in 15 matches for the RCB. He noticed up seven fifty and one century with an average of 61.08 and an impressive strike rate of 160.74 during that IPL season.
IPL 2013 Orange Cap Winner: Michael Hussey
Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey was honoured with the Orange Cap in the IPL 2013 season while playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CS). He scored 733 runs in 17 matches with an average of 52.35 and a strike rate of 129.5. Hussey claimed six half-centuries.
IPL 2014 Orange Cap Winner: Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa emerged as the standout performer with the bat for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2014 as he scored 660 runs in 16 matches. He maintained an average of 44 and an impressive strike rate of 137.78. Uthappa hit five half-centuries.
IPL 2015 Orange Cap Winner: David Warner
David Warner topped the batting charts in the IPL 2015 season as he scored 562 runs in 14 matches and won the Orange Cap. In that IPL season, he hit seven fifty with an average of 43.23 and a strike rate of 141.81.
IPL 2016 Orange Cap Winner: Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli clinched the Orange Cap in the 2016 IPL season as he piled up 973 runs in 16 matches with an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152.03 while captaining RCB. Kohli smashed seven fifty and four century during that IPL season.
IPL 2017 Orange Cap Winner: David Warner
David Warner bagged the orange cap as he slammed 641 runs for SRH in the 2017 IPL season. He hit four half-centuries and a single century in 14 matches. He maintained a strike rate of 141.81 with an average of 58.27. This marked his second time winning the Orange Cap.
IPL 2018 Orange Cap Winner: Kane Williamson
New Zealand’s Kane Williamson clinched the Orange Cap as the SRH captain during the 2018 IPL season. He belted 735 runs in 17 matches. He hit eight half-centuries with an average of 52.50 and a strike rate of 142.44.
IPL 2019 Orange Cap Winner: David Warner
David Warner continued his sublime form with the bat in the 2019 IPL season while captaining SRH. He scored 692 runs with an impressive average of 69.20 and a strike rate of 143.87. He smashed eight fifty and one ton. With this, he won the Orange Cap for the third time.
IPL 2020 Orange Cap Winner: KL Rahul
KL Rahul dominated the batting charts during IPL 2020 as he won an Orange Cap for scoring 670 runs in 14 matches. Punjab Kings’ captain Rahul hit five centuries and one century at a strike rate of 129.34 and an average of 55.83.
IPL 2021 Orange Cap Winner: Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad earned the IPL 2021 Orange Cap for smashing 635 runs in 16 matches. He played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and hit four half-centuries and one century with an impressive average of 45.35 and a strike rate of 136.26.
IPL 2022 Orange Cap Winner: Jos Buttler
England’s wicketkeeper batter Jos Buttler belted 863 runs in 17 matches for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). He slammed four half-centuries and four tons with an average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05
IPL 2023 Orange Cap Winner: Shubman Gill
Gujarat Titans’ batter Shubman Gill won the orange cap in 2023 for scoring 890 runs in 17 matches. He also slammed three centuries and recorded all these runs at a strike rate of 157.80 and an average of 59.33.
