Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni is one the legendary cricketers in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). If someone tries to make an all-time IPL, Dhoni is the most obvious choice. The 42-year-old Dhoni is gearing up to play the 17th edition of the cash-rich league. Leading the defending champions, he will be seen in action in the opening game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at CSK’s homeground.

Dhoni played 30 games for now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant when CSK and Rajasthan Royals faced a two-season ban. He was the captain in the 2016 season but managed to lead RPS to victory in only five games out of 14. He was replaced as captain by Steve Smith. Under Smith, RPS reached the IPL 2017 final. He scored 574 runs from 27 innings at an average of 31.88 including two half-centuries.

Dhoni has played most matches as captain in the history of IPL. He has donned the captaincy hat 14 times for RPS and the rest for CSK. The second on the list is Rohit Sharma who has led Mumbai Indians (MI) in 158 matches.
Most IPL matches
Dhoni also holds the record for most IPL matches. He has made 250 IPL appearances, seven more than Rohit. They are followed by Dinesh Karthik (242) and Virat Kohli (237).
Most dismissals
Dhoni is also ahead of Karthik on the list of most dismissals by a wicketkeeper. He has 180 dismissals including 138 catches and 42 stumpings.
Most IPL titles as captain
Dhoni shares this record with former MI skipper Rohit. Both captains have led their respective franchises to IPL titles five times. Dhoni will have a chance to break the record as Hardik Pandya will lead MI instead of Rohit.
Most runs as wicketkeeper-batter
Dhoni is at the top of the list of leading run-scorers as designated wicketkeeper in IPL history. He has scored 4,964 runs from 244 games at an average of 39.09. Karthik is next on the list with 4,233 runs.
Most sixes for CSK
Dhoni also holds the record for most sixes for CSK. He has 235 sixes, 16 more than former CSK batter Suresh Raina.
Most sixes as captain
Dhoni has hit more than 200 sixes as captain in IPL history. Only Kohli, Rohit, and David Warner have hit more than 100 sixes in IPL.
