Khaleel Ahmed enters IPL 2024 purple cap race after clash against LSG; GT fast bowler slips out of top five

Delhi Capitals’ (DC) Khaleel Ahmed entered the race for the purple cap in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Left-arm pacer Khaleel took a couple of wickets against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 12. He has has nine wickets from six matches. 


Khaleel has replaced the Punjab Kings (PBKS) left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh in the top five. Arshdeep joined the race when he grabbed four wickets against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 9. Arshdeep has eight wickets from five matches. 


Mumbai Indians (MI) speedster Jasprit Bumrah remains at the top with ten wickets alongside Rajasthan Royals (RR) leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal who has ten wickets from five matches as well. However, Bumrah's economy rate of 5.95 is significantly better. MI's pace-bowling spearhead bagged a five-wicket haul against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 11. Meanwhile, Chahal is the only spinner who is in the top five for the purple cap race.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Mustafizur Rahman also retained his spot and remains at number three with nine wickets from four matches. Among all the four pacers besides Bumrah, rest are left-arm pacers.

However, Gujarat Titans (GT) pacer Mohit Sharma was in contention but now he has slipped to the sixth spot. He also has eight wickets from six matches.

Chahal, Arshdeep in action  

RR will be meeting the PBKS on April 13 at their home ground Mullanpur. The eyes will be on RR’s leggie Chahal who can replace Bumrah as the purple cap holder. Chahal is standing with Bumrah in the race with both having ten wickets. However, Arshdeep who is at number five would want to grab some wickets to remain in contention. Meanwhile, Arshdeep’s fellow pacer Kagiso Rabada may also enter the race as he has taken seven wickets from five matches.
