The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 started on March 31 but several players have already been ruled out of the tournament. While a long list of players were ruled out before the tournament started, Gujarat Titans' (GT) Kane Williamson got injured in the IPL 2023 season opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) trying to save a boundary. While injuries are unfortunate, franchises have to find a replacement or manage for the rest of the season without the player’s services. In some cases franchises have to pay the full amount whereas in others they don’t have to at all or pay on pro rata basis.

When a player gets injured before season

If a player has to pull out of the tournament due to an injury before joining the camp, the franchise does not have to pay the amount he was roped in for in the auction. For example, the franchises are not obligated to pay players like Kyle Jamieson, Jhye Richardson, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah who got injured before the season.

When a player is partly available

If a player is available for a number of matches due to an injury, national duty or personal commitments, that the franchise will make the payment on pro rata basis. For example, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Aiden Markram did not play the first match as he had to play in the two-ODI series. Markram and other South African players will be paid on pro rata basis.

When a player is release by franchise or wants to be released

If a player wants to be released before his contract expires, he can ask the franchise to do so. In this case, the franchise will pay him on pro rata basis. On the other hand, if a franchise releases a player before his contract is up they will have to pay the full amount to him.

When a player gets injured during season

If a player gets injured during the tournament, the franchise has to cover the medical expenses. If the player is ruled out, then he will receive the full payment. For example, Williamson will be paid Rs 2 crore by GT.

How franchises pay salaries to players in parts

Some franchises pay their players 50 per cent of their fee at the start of the season and the rest at the end of it. On the other hand, pay them 10 per cent followed by 40 per cent, 20 per cent and 30 per cent.
