Former India's explosive batter Virender Sehwag expressed his disappointment on India's young players' approach of not seeking technical inputs from senior cricketer. Sehwag recalled an advertisement shoot with Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill and revealed that neither of India's young guns talked about cricket even once with him which left him surprised.
Sehwag cited his own example of how he used to make efforts to get an opportunity to meet legends like Sunil Gavaskar to seek technical inputs during his earlier stages of cricket. He said that one should not expect seniors to come out of nowhere and help a budding cricketer without even approaching them.
Sehwag disappointed with India's young cricketers' approach
Earlier, Gavaskar also talked about the prevalent issue in majority of the young cricketers who don't feel free to reach out to senior players to seek inputs during their form slump. The best example supporting this argument can be drawn from the recent incident where Australian team was criticised for not approaching Matthew Hayden during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier in February. Even the likes Virat Kohli approached the iconic Sachin Tendulkar after his nightmarish Test tour of England and what happened next was witnessed by the whole cricketing world. Kohli went on to conquer overseas tours and became the batting juggernaut of modern day cricket.
"He (Prithvi Shaw) did an ad shoot with me. Shubman Gill was also there. None of them talked about cricket for once. We were there for 6 hours. If you want to talk to someone then you have to approach them," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
When Sehwag sought Gavaskar's inputs
"When I was new to the team, I wanted to talk to Sunny Bhai (Gavaskar), So I said to John Wright that 'I'm still a new player, I don't know whether Sunny Bhai will meet me or not', but you should organise that meeting. So Wright organised a dinner in 2003-04 for me and I also said that my partner Aakash Chopra will also come so that we can talk about batting. So he came and had dinner with us. So, you have to make that effort. Sunil Gavaskar won't make an effort to talk to Sehwag or Chopra. You have to request him," Sehwag added.
Talking about the performances of Gill and Shaw in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), they have a contrasting campaign so far. While Gill struck his maiden IPL century couple for days before, Shaw finally got his mojo back after going through a nightmarish patch with the bat in IPL 2023. Shaw, who scored just 47 runs in a total of six matches, struck a brilliant 54 off 38 to help Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 15 runs on Wednesday (May 18).
