The Mumbai Indians (MI) faced defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 Qualifier 2 match courtesy of Shubman Gill's 129 in Ahmedabad on Friday, May 26. GT scored 233 runs and then restricted MI to only 171, earning a 62-run victory.

Rohit Sharma has also been singled out as one of the main reasons for MI's defeat. He failed with the bat, scoring only eight runs despite MI needing a strong start to chase down the big target. After yet another disappointing performance, Rohit is proving to be a flop in IPL playoffs, and his figures in crunch ties speak for themselves.

Rohit Sharma's dismal records in IPL playoff

Rohit Sharma's captaincy record in the IPL season is excellent. Under his stewardship, MI have won four of their five IPL trophies. But when the team were made to chase GT's mammoth total in a do-or-die match, the captain's bat has gone silent.

Rohit has been playing in the IPL since 2008 and has played 15 playoff matches (excluding finals). In these, he only has 133 runs at an average of 9.50 and a strike rate of 89.26.

Another poor IPL season for Rohit Sharma

Meanwhile, Rohit has been underwhelming in IPL 2023. He played 16 matches for MI and has managed to score only 332 runs at an average of 20 and a strike rate of 132. He only has one half-century this season. Despite his impeccable decision-making helping MI to the playoffs of IPL 2023, his performance with the bat has been disappointing.

This form has continued from the 2022 season, where he managed only 268 runs with his bat. In the 2021 season, he scored 381 runs, in the 2020 season he scored 332 runs and in 2019 it was an impressive 405 runs.
