Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Ruturaj Gaikwad equalled 12-year-old record set by Sachin Tendulkar in the 2010 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Gaikwad took 31 innings to score 1,000 runs and become the joint-fastest Indian to reach the milestone.
The CSK opener also became the 13th CSK batter to score 1,000 runs for the franchise. After an inconsistent run in the ongoing IPL, Gaikwad looked a new batter under old captain MS Dhoni. After put to bat first, Gaikwad did not go all guns blazing in the powerplay overs. He contributed 26 runs to CSK’s score of 40 during fielding restrictions.
The second-fastest on the list is former CSK batter Suresh Raina (34 innings) followed by Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant (35 innings), Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Devdutt Padikkal and two-time IPL winning captain Gautam Gambhir (36 innings).
The duo of Gaikwad and Devon Conway broke Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers record for highest partnership for any wicket against SRH in IPL history. The previous best was 157 which came in the 2016 edition.
Gaikwad enters unawanted list
The 24-year-old became the fifth batter to get out for 99 in IPL history. He joined the elite list of Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan, Prithvi Shaw and Chris Gayle. He took 57 deliveries to score 99 runs before getting out in the 18th over to T Natarajan. His knock was studded with six fours and as many sixes.
Highest partnership for CSK
The partnership of 182 runs from 107 deliveries with Conway is now the fourth-highest opening partnership in IPL history. The duo missed the chance to break David Warner and Jonny Bairstow’s record by just four runs. It is also the highest partnership for CSK for any wicket. The previous best was unbeaten 181 by Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis in the 2020 edition.
CSK post big total
The Gaikwad's 99 and Conway's unbeaten 85 off 55 deliveries helped CSK post 202/2 against a potent SRH bowling lineup at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune.
