Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) suffered two major blows this week. Their Rs 16 crore pick Ben Stokes did not play due to a minor toe injury whereas Rs 14 crore pick Deepak Chahar picked up a hamstring injury in the first over over of Mumbai Indians’ (MI) clash itself.

Despite injuries, CSK beat Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on the back of three-fer from Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane’s 19-ball half-century. A day after their comprehensive win over Rohit Sharma-led side the franchise released a statement.

“Chennai Super Kings cricketer Ben Stokes is nursing a minor toe injury which forced him out of the match against Mumbai Indians,” the statement read.

“Chahar will undergo scans to identify the extent of the injury once the team returns to Chennai. The Chennai Super Kings medical staff are closely monitoring both the players and will provide all support necessary for their recovery,” the statemet added.

Both Stokes and Chahar are expected to be out of action for a week which means they are likely to miss the clash against Rajasthan Royals on April 12 at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

In Stokes' absence, Proteas pacer Dwaine Pretorius bowled his full quota of four overs and conceded 28 runs.

The English all-rounder has not made an impact in IPL 2023 so far despite a hefty price tag. He registered scores of 7 and 8 against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) respectively. He did not bowl in the campaign opener and conceded 18 runs from just one over against LSG.

Meanwhile, Chahar is yet to pick a wicket in the season. In the first game, he conceded 29 runs. Against LSG, he was hit all over the park and conceded 55 runs in his quota of four overs. Before leaving the field due to a hamstring injury, he conceded 10 runs in the opening over against MI.

CSK were without their star all-rounder Moeen Ali in the MI clash as well. Ali is likely to take the field against Royals this week.
