On May 4, Punjab Kings (PBKS) announced a 23-year-old Australian batting all-rounder Mitchell Owen as replacement for Glenn Maxwell who is ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to a broken finger.

PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting was impressed by Owen's big-hitting. Earlier this year, he backed him to replace an injured Mitchell Marsh in Australia's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad.

Mitchell Owen had a breakthrough BBL 2024-25 season for Hobart Hurricanes. He scored 108 runs from just 42 balls in the final against Sydney Thunder. He scored 452 runs from 11 innings at an average of 45.20 including two centuries. His strike rate is 203.60.
