Kris Srikkanth wants CSK to not let R Ashwin bowl in powerplay overs

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to maintain their winning momentum in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after beating Mumbai Indians (MI) in their campaign opener. They have suffered back-to-back defeats in their last two matches which has seen them tumbling down the IPL 2025 points table. Ruturaj Gaikwad's CSK have encountered difficulties while chasing. A perceived lack of aggressive firepower in their batting lineup has been a contributing factor to their struggles in the past two games. The five-time champions have faced criticism from both analysts and supporters regarding their game plan. While head coach Stephen Fleming has defended the team's approach, it appears that some adjustments to their strategy and personnel may be necessary to return to winning ways.

Kris Srikkanth's key advice for Chennai Super Kings regarding R Ashwin

Kris Srikkanth, a member of India's victorious 1983 World Cup team, has offered his advice to CSK, suggesting that they implement a few changes to their playing XI. Specifically, he recommended the inclusion of Devon Conway at the top of the batting order. Srikkanth also expressed his continued support for Ravichandran Ashwin, who has faced some criticism, advocating for his inclusion in the XI but suggesting that the team management consider altering his role with the ball.

“Conway has to come in place of Jamie Overton and also bring in Anshul Kamboj into the XI. With regards to Ashwin, don’t drop him, but stop him from bowling in the powerplay. Between 7-18th over he can be effective, with Jadeja and Noor Ahmad, they can easily slip in 10 overs at least. I will drop Tripathi and bring in Kamboj and then Conway in place of Overton,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

The veteran Indian spinner made a high-profile return to Chennai Super Kings with a whopping price tag of Rs 9.75 crore. However his performances thus far have not entirely met the expectations that come with such a hefty contract, as he has managed to secure three wickets in the same number of matches played.

Moreover, aside from Shivam Dube's contributions, Chennai has appeared to lack substantial hitting power in their middle order. Even the seasoned campaigner MS Dhoni has not been able to significantly bolster the team's batting performance in the matches played up to this point.

In light of these observations, Kris Srikkanth has proposed that CSK should include Shivam Dube in their starting XI rather than utilizing him solely as an Impact Player. Additionally, he has recommended that the five-time champions consider bringing Mukesh Chowdhary back into their initial lineup for upcoming matches.

“I would make Shivam Dube play in the XI and bring in Andre Siddarth as an Impact Player. Even Mukhesh Chowdhary is a good option, he has bowled well for CSK in the past,” Srikkanth concluded.

After losing to RR, CSK have tumbled down to seventh position in the IPL 2025 points table. They will next face Delhi Capitals (DC) in their upcoming IPL 2025 clash which is scheduled to be played for Saturday, April 5 at the Chepauk stadium.
