Australian captain Pat Cummins has stated his intention to return in time for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after missing the current ICC Champions Trophy because of an ankle injury. Cummins is making the most of his time away from action by spending it with his family and concentrating on his recovery. He sees this mandated break as a chance to recuperate completely in time for the World Test Championship and the IPL.

Prior to the Champions Trophy, Australia suffered severe injury setbacks that prevented several important players from competing. The team lost some of its most seasoned players when Cummins, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, and all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Marsh were also declared out. In an interview with Cricket.com, Cummins discussed his time off the field and his preparations for a seamless comeback.

"It's been an amazing month or so, just focusing entirely on family and not having to worry about training or an upcoming tour. Being completely present has been really special. That’s the goal—start bowling in the next week or so, build up gradually, and be ready for IPL," Cummins told cricket.com.au.

Cummins was first included in Australia's Champions Trophy preliminary team, despite doubts about his availability. However, he was ultimately ruled out due to an injury he got during the latter stages of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Australia defeated India 3-1 in the series in January 2025. Vice-captain Steven Smith has assumed leadership of the Champions Trophy campaign in his absence.

Cummins' recuperation continues to be a key priority for Australia's long-term plans as they get ready to play England on February 22 to start their championship run. The Australian captain is hopeful about making a great comeback for the IPL, where he is anticipated to play a crucial role for his team, even though missing a high-profile event like the Champions Trophy is a blow.

His fitness will play a significant role in determining the team's prospects in all formats as Australia looks to the future, including the World Test Championship. For the time being, he is recovering gradually to make sure he is ready for the trials that lie ahead.
