In the sixth match of the Legends League Cricket (LLC) 2024, Shikhar Dhawan-led Gujarat Greats suffered a batting collapse and lost to Dinesh Karthik's Southern Super Stars by 26 runs at Barkatullah Khan Stadium, Jodhpur on September 23.
Prasanna’s slog overs charge, Manan’s six-fer
Dhawan won the toss and opted to bowl first. Parthiv Patel and Martin Guptill could not use the powerplay overs well. Parthiv lost his wicket for a single-digit score to Liam Plunkett. Former KKR spinner Manan Sharma ended Guptill's stay at the crease. Guptill scored 22 runs from 27 balls. Hamilton Masakadza used the fielding restrictions well and hit a couple of fours and a six in his 12-ball 20 cameo. In the ninth over, Masakadza and Kedar Jadhav lost their wickets to Manan. Seekkuge Prasanna got the better of Pawan Negi as Super Stars lost half the side for 65 in the 11th over.
Skipper Karthik could not do much with the bat either. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 18 runs from 19 balls. In the same over, Manan dismissed Chirag Gandhi and Suboth Bhati for ducks. They were 88 for eight wickets after 15 overs. In the slog overs Chathuranga de Silva played attacking shots whereas Suranga Lakmal held on to one end. In the final over, Silva reached his fifty from 25 balls. On the last ball, Lakmal was run out. Silva remained unbeaten for 53 off 28 balls featurning six fours and a couple of sixes. He helped Super Stars post 144/9 on the board.
Dhawan’s fifty in vain
Dhawan started the run chase well hitting Lakmal for a six and a four in the first over. Dhawan hit a couple more sixes in the powerplay overs. Gujarat Greats were 57 for no loss after six overs. Morne van Wyk fell to the first ball bowled by Jadhav. He scored 15 runs from 19 balls. In Jadhav's next over, Lendl Simmons was run out. Mohammad Kaif struggled to rotate strike and got out stumped to Negi in the 13th over. In the same over, Dhawan reached his fifty from 37 balls. After doing damage with bat, Silva got the prized wicket of Dhawan. The skipper scored 52 runs from 48 balls.
After Dhawan departed, Gujarat Greats suffered an epic collapse. After Dhawan's wicket, only 19 runs were scored and five wickets were lost. Gujarat Greats posted 118/9 and lost the match by 26 runs. This is their first loss from two games.
