West Indian batter Andre Russell's impressive batting in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 for the LA Knight Riders was negated by Australian batters Matthew Short, who played in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season for Punjab Kings on Friday (July 21) morning.

Russell smashed 70 runs in 37 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes for the Knight Riders. The powerful batter helped his team score 175 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. In response, Matthew Short scored 43 runs in 35 balls with 3 fours and a six, as the Washington Freedom chased down the target in 18.1 overs for the loss of 4 wickets.


Russell rocked


Washington won the toss and chose to bowl first and they started with aplomb as LAKR lost four of their batters with the team on 68 runs. This is when Andre Russell came in to bat and took the game to their opponents. Russell, who batted at number 6, started hitting fours and sixes at will as he scored an unbeaten innings of 70 runs in just 37 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes. He singlehandedly took the Knight Riders to 175 runs for 7 wickets.

Captain Moises Henriques took the most three wickets for Washington.


Short wins it for Freedom


Washington openers Matthew Short and Andries Gous started off with a 68-run opening partnership. Gous then went on to score 40 runs in 15 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes to his name. Matthew Short scored 43 runs in 35 balls with 3 fours and a six. Both openers made the match easier for the middle order. Glenn Phillips scored 29 runs in 19 balls with a four and 2 sixes as the team from Washington scored 177 runs for 4 wickets in 18.1 overs and won the match by 6 wickets.
