The Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 tournament saw MI New York secure their place in the final by defeating the Texas Super Kings in Qualifier 2 in Dallas on July 29. Chasing a target of 159 runs, MI New York emerged victorious with an over to spare, thanks to a brilliant performance from South African youngster Dewald Brevis (41 not out) and Tim David (33).
Brevis, often referred to as Junior de Villiers or Baby AB, hit an unbeaten 33-ball innings of 41 runs, which included A four and 2 sixes. This was coupled with David's explosive 20-ball innings where he scored 33 runs, which included 4 sixes, and applied immense pressure on the Super Kings bowlers.
The Super Kings, led by Faf du Plessis, were bowled out for 158 runs, aided by Trent Boult's four-wicket haul. Devon Conway was the highest scorer for the Super Kings with 38 runs in 35, including 3 fours and a six.
The Seattle Orcas have already qualified for the finals after defeating the Super Kings in Qualifier 1. MI New York, owned by Indian Premier League (IPL) side, earned their spot in Qualifier 2 after beating Washington Freedom in the Eliminator. With two consecutive victories, MINY secured their place in the final, while the Super Kings were eliminated after two successive losses in the playoffs. The final is scheduled for July 3.
The Super Kings struggled against Boult's bowling attack. After being invited to bat first by MINY skipper Nicholas Pooran, the Super Kings lost early wickets, including that of captain Du Plessis. Despite Conway's steady 38-run innings and Milind Kumar's contribution of 37 runs, the team was only able to cross the 150-run mark. Boult had an impressive bowling spell, taking four wickets for 24 runs.
New York's run chase started with the loss of Slade Van Steden's (6) wicket to Rusty Theron in the fourth over. However, a quickfire 36 from Shayan Jahangir and Pooran's 23 runs provided a solid platform for the chase.
The match swung in New York's favour from the 15th over when David and Brevis hit two sixes off Santner, followed by three sixes by David in the next over off Mohammad Mohsin. Despite David's dismissal in the same over, New York was well within reach of the target. Brevis completed the task, ending the match with a four in the 19th over.
