New Zealand ended their win drought on Indian soil in the red-ball format after a long span of over three and a half decades. New Zealand registered their third Test win on Indian soil and achieved multiple feats at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. However, against a team which has dominated like no other team at home, New Zealand became the first team in the 21st century to chase down a target over 100 runs successfully in India.
New Zealand beat India by eight wickets. This is the third time a visiting team has managed to beat India despite no play possible on first day of the Test.
After getting bowled out for 46, India made a brave comeback with 462 runs in the second innings. This is the highest innings total for India in home defeat. The previous best of 449 came against Pakistan in 2005 at the same venue.
The last time New Zealand won a Test in India was at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in 1988. Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel was the only New Zealand player who was born when the win in Mumbai came.
Easy run chase on Day 5
On the final day of the Test, New Zealand openers departed early in the run chase of 107. Jasprit Bumrah got the wickets of skipper Tom Latham and Devon Conway with the new ball. Will Young and Rachin Ravindra's unbeaten knocks helped New Zealand chase down the target in 27.4 overs with eight wickets in hand.
New Zealand move up in WTC standings
New Zealand also revived their World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 campaign after losing the Test series on Sri Lankan soil. They climbed two spots to occupy the fourth position of the points table with their fourth win from nine Tests and a win percentage of 44.44. Meanwhile, India remained at the top despite the defeat. India have lost three out of 12 Tests in the current cycle. The finalists of the first two WTC editions have a win percentage of 68.06.
