Shubman Gill became the youngest batter to score a double century in ODIs. Gill broke his teammate Ishan Kishan's record which was created on December 10, 2022 against Bangladesh. Shubman now holds the record aged 23 years and 132 days.

Gill also became the first batter to score an ODI double century against New Zealand. The previous highest individual score by an Indian batter against New Zealand belonged to legendary Sachin Tendulkar who scored 186 not out at the same venue in 1999.

Gill scored 208 runs from 149 deliveries including 19 fours and nine sixes. His double ton helped India post a daunting total of 349/8 on the board. He is the fifth Indian batter to score a double century in ODIs.

Earlier in his innings, the 23-year-old also became the fastest Indian to 1,000 runs from just 19 innings. Gill broke Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan's record who achieved the feat from 24 innings. Overall, he is the third-fastest on the list. Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman holds the record as he achieved the feat from just 18 innings.

This is Gill’s third ODI ton. He got to his double ton with a hat-trick of sixes in the penultimate over bowled by his former Gujarat Titans (GT) teammate Lockie Ferguson.

Gill single-handedly helped India post a big total in the series opener. The second top-scorer in the innings was skipper Rohit Sharma who scored 34 off 38 deliveries.

In the 30th over, Gill got to his century from 87 deliveries. He got to his 150 in style as well with a six off Michael Bracewell. He needed just 20 deliveries to get from 150 to 200. He got out in the final over after hitting a six off Henry Shipley.

Gill got two chances during his 208-run knock. The first was in 19th over. Skipper Tom Latham missed a stumping chance off Bracewell's bowling. He was batting on 46 then. The second chance came in the 38th over. Gill's catch was dropped off Shipley's bowling when he was batting on 124.
