Story Highlights:

Rohit Sharma-led India won the T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Rohit Sharma will now be seen in action in three match ODI series vs NZ.

Star Indian batter Rohit Sharma was clearly overjoyed when former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary and current International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah called him India’s captain during a recent event. A video of the moment has gone viral on social media. Rohit had been replaced by Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain ahead of the Australia tour in October 2025.

India's ICC titles under Rohit's captaincy

Even though he stepped down, Rohit had an impressive run as captain, leading India to back-to-back ICC titles, the T20 World Cup in 2024, and the Champions Trophy in 2025.

Rohit retired from T20Is and Tests

Rohit had already retired from T20Is and Test cricket, with Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill taking over leadership in those formats respectively. With the ODI World Cup coming up in 2027 and Rohit now 38, the selectors decided it was the right time to give Gill the 50-over captaincy too, allowing him plenty of time to settle into the role.

Jay Shah for Rohit Sharma

Despite no longer being India’s serving skipper, Jay Shah addressed Rohit as captain and after hearing that Rohit was seen smiling along with wife Ritika Sajdeh. Here is the video.

“Our captain is sitting here. I will call him captain only, as he has led the team to two ICC trophies. During the 2023 World Cup, after winning ten successive matches, we could only win hearts but could not lift the trophy," Shah said while speaking at the United in Triumph event.

“In February 2024, I had said in Rajkot that in the next World Cup, we will win both hearts and the cup," Shah added.

Rohit was announced as Virat Kohli's sucessor to lead India in ODIs in December 2021 and went on to lead the team in 56 games.

Rohit's upcoming assignment

Rohit will now be seen in the action in upcoming three match ODI series which is scheduled to start from January 11.
