PSL 2024: Shoaib Malik strikes boundary on last ball as Karachi Kings down Shaheen Afridi's Lahore Qalandars by 3 wickets in thrilling game

Karachi Kings clinched a nail-biting victory against Lahore Qalandars with a three-wicket win at National Bank Stadium in Karachi on a thrilling Saturday (March 9) night. The match, a critical encounter for both teams, saw Karachi chasing down Lahore's first innings score of 177/5 on the final delivery, keeping their playoff aspirations alive in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9.

Karachi Kings opts to bowl

The game began with Karachi opting to field after winning the toss. Lahore's innings got off to a shaky start as Mirza Tahir Baig, stepping in for Sahibzada Farhan, was dismissed early for 4 by Anwar Ali. However, Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique quickly stabilised the innings with a robust 70-run partnership. Fakhar's aggressive batting in the powerplay, including notable hits in the fourth and sixth overs, propelled Lahore to 44/1 by the end of the powerplay.

Fakhar and Abdullah continued their assault, particularly against Shoaib Malik in the ninth over, but Fakhar's innings came to an abrupt end at 54 runs due to a sharp fielding effort from Muhammad Irfan Khan. Abdullah, alongside Shai Hope, continued to push the score forward until both fell to Zahid Mahmood's double-wicket over, leaving Lahore at 122/4 after 15 overs.

Despite these losses, Abdullah reached his half-century, contributing significantly to Lahore's innings before his dismissal for 55 runs. A vital sixth-wicket partnership between David Wiese and Sikandar Raza pushed Lahore to a competitive total of 177/5 by the end of their 20 overs, with Wiese and Raza remaining undefeated at 24 and 22 runs, respectively.

Strong start to the run chase for Karachi Kings

In response, Karachi's openers Tim Seifert and James Vince provided a strong start, amassing 58 runs in the powerplay. Vince's striking performance contributed 42 runs before his dismissal, while Shan Masood and Kieron Pollard added to the scoreboard but fell shortly after. Lahore's bowling efforts, particularly from Tayyab Abbas and Sikandar Raza, kept the game in balance.

As the match progressed, a mix-up led to Seifert's run-out, increasing the pressure on Karachi with 65 runs required off the final 34 balls. However, a crucial partnership between Muhammad Irfan Khan and Shoaib Malik edged Karachi closer to the target, with Irfan scoring 35 runs before being bowled by Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The dramatic final over, with Karachi needing eight runs to win, saw further twists with Anwar Ali and Arafat Minhas's dismissals bringing the equation down to six runs needed off three balls. Shoaib Malik's last-ball boundary sealed the victory for Karachi, marking a thrilling end to a closely fought match.

Tayyab Abbas led Lahore's bowling attack with two wickets, while Shaheen, Zaman, and Sikandar Raza managed one each, but it wasn't enough to halt Karachi's chase. The match not only delivered high-octane cricket action but also significant implications for the PSL 9 standings, with Karachi's win keeping their playoff hopes alive while Lahore reflects on what could have been in this edge-of-the-seat thriller.
