Pakistan had an opportunity to gain an early upper hand when Shaheen Shah Afridi managed to get an edge off David Warner, who was then on two runs. However, Abdullah Shafique's dropped catch at first slip allowed Warner a crucial reprieve. This moment proved pivotal as Warner, alongside Usman Khawaja, built a solid 90-run partnership for the first wicket over 27.1 overs. The duo's stand was eventually broken at the stroke of lunch when Salman Agha dismissed Warner, who was caught in the slip cordon by Babar Azam.
Warner contributed a valuable 38 runs off 83 balls, a knock that saw him surpass Steve Smith as Australia's second-highest run-scorer in international cricket. Following Warner's departure, Khawaja also returned to the pavilion, dismissed by Hasan Ali, who came in as a replacement for the injured Khurram Shehzad. Khawaja's 42 off 101 balls included three boundaries.
Steve Smith, known for his resilience, managed to score 26 runs before Aamer Jamal claimed his wicket. On the other end, Marnus Labuschagne exhibited remarkable patience, remaining not out on 44 runs off 120 deliveries, including three fours. Travis Head, partnering Labuschagne, was unbeaten on nine runs from 19 balls at the close of play.
As the second day approaches, Pakistan's bowling unit will be keen to make early breakthroughs to restrict Australia's score. However, Australia's deep batting lineup poses a significant challenge for the visitors. The Pakistani bowlers will need to exploit the conditions and maintain consistent pressure to dismantle Australia's batting.
