BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that the board won't take any decision in haste.

India have lost 4 Tests in the current WTC cycle already, including 2 at home.

The Test series defeat to South Africa has led to several former cricketers questioning head coach Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style, tactics and team selection. Not just Gambhir but chief selector Ajit Agarkar has come under the scanner as well. While India have had a bumpy ride in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to avoid “knee-jerk reactions”. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that changes will be made only after the tenure is complete as they board plans for long-term.

“BCCI doesn’t take knee-jerk reactions. We are going on as per our long-term plan. Winning or losing is a part of the game. We don’t make changes every now and then. If any change is required, we take a call at the end of that particular period,” Saikia told TOI.

Gambhir wants BCCI to take a call

Gambhir was asked about his future as head coach after the series defeat as India slipped fifth on the WTC 2025-27 points table. The former India opener went on to list his achievements as head coach in white-ball cricket. Then, he talked about batting failures and how he wants tough characters with limited skills over talented cricketers.

"It is up to the BCCI to decide my future. But, I am the same guy who got you results in England and was coach for Champions Trophy. The blame lies with everyone and starts with me," Gambhir said.

"We need to play better. From 95/1 to 122/7 is not acceptable. You don't blame any individual or any particular shot. Blame lies with everyone. I never blamed individuals and won't do it going forward.

"You don't need the most flamboyant and talented cricketers to play Test cricket. What we need is tough characters with limited skills. They make good Test cricketers," he added.

What’s next for Gambhir as head coach?

Gambhir’s next big assignment is T20 World Cup 2026 at home. Before that, India will face South Africa and New Zealand in limited-overs series. Defending champions and co-hosts Team India have been placed in Group A alongside Namibia, Netherlands, USA and Pakistan.
