England team's data analysts Nathan Leamon and Freddie Wilde have been reportedly fired

The decision came with just one month to India tour of England

In preparation for their highly anticipated Test series against India, England Team is undergoing a big shift in its approach. As reported by The Telegraph, two of England's leading data analysts Nathan Leamon and Freddie Wilde are stepping down from their positions ahead of the home Test series against the subcontinent giants.

Nathan Leamon and Freddie Wilde played a crucial role in England's World Cup 2019 and T20 World Cup 2022. Their expertise involved leveraging data analytics and computer models to inform team selections and strategise game tactics. However, a change in philosophy began to take shape with the appointment of Brendon McCullum as the head coach of the Test team in 2022, a role he later expanded to include the white-ball teams in 2024.

Reportedly, Brendon McCullum advocates for a more straightforward and intuitive approach to the game. The head coach has reportedly encouraged players to place greater emphasis on their natural instincts rather than heavily relying on data and statistical analysis. This shift in mindset has manifested in fewer team meetings and a reduced number of support staff present during matches under his leadership.

Consequently, following the reported departure of the data expert duo, English players are now expected to assume greater ownership of their individual preparation and on-field performance. The team management also holds the view that while data-driven insights are valuable in franchise leagues such as the IPL, their applicability and impact are less pronounced in the context of international cricket.

The rationale behind the English team management's reduced emphasis on data in international cricket stems from the perceived differences between franchise leagues like the IPL and the international arena. In the IPL, the frequency of matches provides ample opportunity to identify players' vulnerabilities through data analysis. However, in international cricket, where matches are less frequent and opponents vary more widely, players are considered less predictable, leading to the belief that an over-reliance on extensive data might not yield the same level of strategic advantage.

In the interim, the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies will proceed without the involvement of Nathan Leamon and Freddie Wilde, and no direct replacements will be appointed for them. Instead, Rupert Lewis, the team's current Test analyst, will expand his responsibilities to cover both the red-ball and white-ball formats. This consolidation of analytical roles is expected to generate cost savings and foster improved synergy between the Test and white-ball setups. It's worth noting that England's performance in major ICC tournaments has declined since their triumph in the 2022 T20 World Cup, with a record of only 3 wins in 15 matches across the ODI World Cup 2023, T20 World Cup 2024, and Champions Trophy 2025.

Nathan Leamon shared a particularly close working relationship with former England captain Eoin Morgan, even devising a system of discreet signals during matches to suggest optimal bowling changes. With his extensive experience also encompassing work with teams in the IPL and PSL, Leamon is now anticipated to focus more intently on opportunities within the T20 league circuit. Meanwhile, Freddie Wilde will continue his association with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Meanwhile, the five-match Test series between India and England is slated to start at the Leeds Cricket Ground in Headingley, with the first match taking place from June 20 to 24. Following a week's interval, the cricketing action will then shift to Birmingham's Edgbaston Cricket Ground, where the second Test will be held from July 2 to July 6. Just four days later, the third Test will unfold at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in the heart of London, from July 10 to July 14. Manchester will then take over hosting duties for fourth Test at the Old Trafford from July 23 to July 27.
