Former England captain Nasser Hussain has slammed the Jos Buttler-led side's approach in white-ball cricket of late. Hussain said that England were clumsy in the T20I series which led to a heavy defeat. He is disappointed by how England batters have not been able to tackle the spinners.
"It's followed similar paths, hasn't it? Most of the games, even the T20Is, have seen periods where they've been in the game and then a clumsy mistake like that [around Phil Salt's run-out in the first ODI]. Then, spin comes on. Ravindra Jadeja bowls beautifully. The T20Is they lost and they lost a lot of those games by spin as well," shared Hussain while speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket podcast.
Hussain has lauded selectors for picking a "wonderful side" as plenty players have emerged across formats of late. He does not expect much from the current England side in the next few months and compared it to the team that was when Eoin Morgan was captain and Trevor Bayliss was head coach.
"So India, obviously in that final in the World Cup in Ahmedabad, they won the T20 World Cup, so they're a formidable white-ball side. And also, the depth to Indian cricket. Abhishek Sharma in those T20Is - wow, what a player! Shubman Gill comes back in. Virat Kohli doesn't play. Whoever they pick, they are a wonderful side.
"But English white-ball cricket has been way off for quite some time now from where it was under [Eoin] Morgan and [Trevor] Bayliss. So, I do think it's a very important few months ahead," he added.
In the previous edition of ODI World Cup on Indian soil, England were knocked out of the semifinal race early. They finished seventh on the points table with just six wins from nine games. In the T20 World Cup 2024, they were beaten by Rohit Sharma-led India in the semifinal.
Comfortable win for India
In the first ODI, England squandered a good start and were bowled out for 248. Despite half-centuries from Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell, England could not post a big target in Nagpur ODI. They lost the match by four wickets.
