Live updates: India vs England Test series squad announcement

India vs England squad live updates: Shubman Gill was on Saturday appointed India's new Test captain while Rishabh Pant was named his deputy, starting with the five-match series in England.

The selectors decision on the team's leadership was on expected lines following the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Young left-hander B Sai Sudharsan earned his maiden Test call-up.

The squad also features Karun Nair, who returns to the national set up up after seven years. A notable exclusion was pacer Mohammed Shami, who was deemed not fit enough for the long series.

"Last year or so we have looked at Shubman (for leadership). We are hopeful he is the guy who is going (to take the team forward). It is a high pressure job but he is a terrific player. We wish him all the best," said chief selector Ajit Agarkar after announcing the squad.

On Shami, he added: "His workload is not where it needs to be. We were hoping he will be available but it is unfortunate. At the moment he is not dully fit. From tour of Australia, Harshit Rana and Sarfaraz Khan have been dropped.

    On Shreyas Iyer

"Shreyas had a good one-day series, played well in domestic as well but right now there's no room in test cricket."

  • 02:38 PM • 24 May 2025

    On Shardul and Nitsh Reddy

Shardul a bowling allrounder, sometimes you need a player like that, depending on team balance. he's going on the A tour as well. NKR is a batting allrounder at this point, hopefully his bowling will come along as well."

  • 02:37 PM • 24 May 2025

    On Arshdeep Singh

"He's a quality bowler and has had a taste of counTy as well. he plays domestic when he can. A tall guy, can bowl with the new ball, has body of work in red-ball cricket and in recent form in the last couple of years. Bumrah unlikely to play all five Tests, we needed a bit of variety."

  • 02:37 PM • 24 May 2025

    On Karun Nair

"Sometimes you just have to make good decisions. Sarfaraz, I know he got a 100 in the first Test and then didn't get runs. Sometimes it's decisions the team management takes. At the moment, Karun has scored heaps of runs in domestic, has played a bit of Test cricket, played a bit of county cricket. With Virat not there, clearly we're lacking a bit of experience. We felt his experience could help. "

  • 02:36 PM • 24 May 2025

    On Virat Kohli retirement

"When guys like that retire, always big holes to fill. Ashwin also retired. Those three have been stalwarts. Always difficult. One way of looking at it is, opportunity for someone else. Had conversations with both of them. Virat reached out early April, seem him give 200% every ball he plays even when he's not batting or on the field. Felt he'd given everything he had, if he can't keep up to the standards it was time for him. It's come from him. Have to respect that. They've earned that respect."

  • 02:35 PM • 24 May 2025

    On openers:

"GG and Shubman might take a call on opener once they get there. But once they get there, they'll have a think about that."

  • 02:35 PM • 24 May 2025

    On Mohammed Shami

"He's had a little bit of a setback over the past week, got some MRIs done. Wasn't going to be able to play five Tests. Don't think his workload is where he needs to be. Medical guys told he'll be ruled out. We were hoping he'll play some part, but if he's not fit, we'd rather pick guys fit and available rather than waiting."

Agarkar on why Gill picked over Bumrah for captaincy

In the case of Bumrah, he was overlooked for the top job because of workload management reasons.

"Bumrah was the vice-captain in Australia, but since he was not available for all five [Tests then], we wanted him fit...," Agarkar said. "We'd rather have him bowling as well as he does than put extra burden on him. We had a chat with him and he's okay with it. It was to do with his workload maangement and about having him fit as a player."

Ex-BCCI selector on India's opening pair

Former BCCI selector Saba Karim gives hi stake on the Indian opening pair for him - “Before the selectors decide on the squad, they must keep two things in mind: don’t get carried away by recent performances and respect the pecking order — players who have consistently played for India A or have been part of the Test setup. Abhimanyu Easwaran fits that bill. He has a solid domestic record and has done well in SENA countries. I’d go with Easwaran and Jaiswal as the opening pair—one right-hander and one left-hander, with strong technique for English conditions.”

Why Shami will unlikely to make cut in squad

As per the Indian Express, the senior selection committee is likely to leave out ace pacer Mohammed Shami from the upcoming England tour. The report further stated that BCCI’s medical team has informed the Indian board that the 34-year-old pacer won’t be able to bowl longer spells. Chances of him playing all five Test matches are less too, going ahead. Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah also told the board that his body can’t take the toll of more than three Test matches.

    Who will open for India?

India batter  Abhimanyu Easwaran will most likely to receive his Test cap in England. He was a reserve opener in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He was also named as India A captain for the two first-class fixtures against England A, which will be a great chance for him to prove his worth. He has played 101 first-class games and 7674 runs, including 27 first-class centuries.

Another contender will be B Sai Sudharsan, who is currently featuring for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, his county experience with Surrey made his case strong. However, he hasn’t played a lot as an opener in first-class cricket. He averages 39.93 across 49 first-class innings and has seven centuries.

Or there are chances that the management will simply go with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal as openers, which means that Abhimanyu continues to tour as a reserve opener.

Why BCCI picked Shubman Gill over Jasprit Bumrah to lead India

There were reports that Jasprit Bumrah won't be able to feature in all five matches and the team management want a captain who can feature in all five matches of the series.

Who will be India's pacers in England?

Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack with Mohammed Siraj, but there are threats over Mohammed Shami's participation due to concerns over his fitness for the longest format. In Shami's absence, left-arm speedster Arshdeep Singh will be India's dark horse in the red-ball series, considering his participation in County Cricket. Arshdeep Singh will be a right option for India
