Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi is all set to bear the brunt of BCCI and ICC altogether, if he remains adamant on not returning the Asia Cup 2025 trophy to the victorious Team India. Notably, BCCI is preparing to escalate the Asia Cup trophy handover dispute to ICC. The controversy began after the Indian team, following their victory over Pakistan in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 28, refused to collect the trophy from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi during the presentation ceremony. As a result, the trophy is currently being held at the office of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in Dubai.
Asia Cup 2025 trophy controversy heats up
The latest development follows an official email sent by the BCCI to the ACC, urgently requesting that Naqvi hand over the trophy to the champion Indian side. However, Naqvi, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, has remained firm in his position. He has reportedly insisted that the BCCI must send an official along with a player to personally collect the silverware from the Asian cricket body's headquarters in Dubai. The BCCI, which is unwilling to comply with this condition, will now take the unresolved matter to the ICC.
Mohsin Naqvi's impeachment on cards
But let's know can BCCI explore impeaching Mohsin Naqvi if he didn't budge his ground. The option to seek Naqvi's impeachment as ACC President following the Asia Cup 2025 trophy handover controversy is indeed a possibility. This course of action has gained viability because BCCI reportedly has the support of a majority of the ACC's board members to challenge Naqvi's conduct.
However, the BCCI is not looking to rush the impeachment process. The primary reason for their restraint is a desire for a drama-free World Cup in India next year. The BCCI is focused on exploring all diplomatic and procedural avenues available to secure the Asia Cup trophy for the winning team first.
Consequently, the impeachment of Naqvi is currently viewed as a last resort. The matter is expected to be raised and discussed at the upcoming ICC meeting, where the BCCI will first attempt to resolve the issue through official channels before escalating to a formal motion for his removal.
