India captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed what happened inside the dressing room after the side won the T20 World Cup 2026. India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to lift the trophy for a record third time.
India's domination in T20Is
Since Suryakumar took charge as captain and Gautam Gambhir became the head coach, the team has developed a strong winning mindset. Under Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy, India have not lost a bilateral T20I series so far and also won the Asia Cup in 2025. The team has focused more on collective success rather than individual milestones.
Suryakumar Yadav revealed Gautam Gambhir's pep talk
Speaking to The Indian Express, Suryakumar revealed that Gambhir delivered the final speech in the dressing room after the World Cup win. According to the Indian captain, the coach placed the trophy in front of the players and reminded them that winning championships as a team matters more than personal achievements.

"It was Gauti bhai’s. He put the trophy in front of us and said: This is the most important thing in our dressing room, nothing else matters. How many runs you score, people will forget. But they will always remember this trophy. We will all be remembered for how many championships we won as a team. You can win 100 bilateral matches and no one will remember. That’s what drives us," Suryakumar said.
How Team India made Gambhir laugh
Gambhir is known for his serious nature during matches, and Suryakumar was also asked whether the coach smiled after the team’s strong performance in the tournament. The skipper joked that the team eventually managed to make their coach happy during the crucial stages of the competition.

"In the first four games, we didn’t give him a chance to laugh, but after that I think he was very happy watching this team, because I don’t think any T20 side in India has ever batted like this, scoring 250, 256, chasing well. I think after the final he smiled the most," Suryakumar added.
Suryakumar Yadav's upcoming assignment
Suryakumar Yadav will now be seen featuring for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, where he will represent the Mumbai Indians (MI). MI will start their IPL campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 29 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
