Matheesha Pathirana got injured in T20 WC clash vs Australia.

Sri Lanka have been dealt a big blow ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, with their pace spearhead Matheesha Pathirana likely to miss the tournament after suffering a calf strain. The injury could also force him to sit out the early matches of the upcoming IPL season.

When did Matheesha Pathirana got injured?

Pathirana picked up the injury during Sri Lanka’s match against Australia in Pallekele. He pulled up while bowling his fourth delivery, clutching his left leg in pain. The 23-year-old was helped off the field and did not return to complete his spell.

Sri Lanka batting consultant Vikram Rathour on Pathirana injury

Speaking ahead of Sri Lanka’s final group game against Zimbabwe, batting consultant Vikram Rathour confirmed that the young fast bowler has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament. He added that an official announcement regarding his replacement is expected soon, with team management still discussing their options.

"I think he's been declared unfit for the rest of the tournament. I think that news will be coming out, if it's ruling him out. As far as the replacement is concerned, it's still being discussed" said Sri Lanka batting consultant Vikram Rathour.

Pathirana's impact on Sri Lanka

Pathirana has been a key figure in Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, especially in the death overs, where his pace and slingy action make him difficult to face. Finding the right replacement won’t be easy, but Sri Lanka does have a few options. Dilshan Madushanka has recently returned from injury and is back to full fitness, though his T20I numbers are not very strong. Binura Fernando and Nuwan Thushara are also in the mix. The team management is even considering adjustments that could strengthen their batting or spin department.

Sri Lanka's Super 8 fixture

Sri Lanka’s Super Eight schedule includes matches against England in Pallekele and New Zealand at Khettarama, along with another fixture in Pallekele against an opponent yet to be decided.
