India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav shared positive fitness updates for both Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar going into the 2026 T20 World Cup. The two weren't in action in the T20I series against New Zealand as they have been recovering from their respective injuries. While Tilak has been recovering from a groin injury, Sundar is undergoing rehab for a rib injury.that he had sustained during the ODI series against New Zealand.

Suryakumar on Tilak and Sundar's condition

According to Suryakumar, Tilak will be joining the team next week in Mumbai and will be participating in two practice games. He also said that the latter has already started batting, bowling, fielding and is expected to regain full fitness soon.

“Tilak Varma…he has been shaping well. I heard he is playing two games in Bombay (Mumbai) on the 2nd and the 4th. I think two games are enough. I spoke to him yesterday only. He has started batting, bowling, fielding and everything. So, hopefully, we should have him soon," Suryakumar said in the post-match press-conference.

When asked about Sundar, Suryakumar remarked that he has almost started batting, bowling and is likely to be back in action soon.

“I think Washy is also doing well. We spoke to both of them (Tilak and Washington) yesterday. Tilak is much better. Washy has almost started his bowling and batting. He is also looking good. Hopefully, we get him back soon," Suryakumar stated.

India seal T20I series vs NZ

Meanwhile, India defeated New Zealand comprehensively by 46 runs in the fifth and final T20I of the series. The hosts posted a mammoth total of 271/5 on the board in 20 overs thanks to an incredible century from Ishan Kishan and a valiant knock of 63 from Suryakumar. In reply, they bundled out the Kiwis for 225 runs to win the series by 4-1. They will now be shifting their focus to the T20 World Cup where they will begin their campaign with the clash aggainst USA on February 7.
