The left-hander’s injury came at a particularly frustrating time, following a dominant run of form. After finishing as the top run-scorer in last year’s home series against South Africa with 187 runs, he transitioned into the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he notched scores of 109 and 34. However, a sudden abdominal issue required surgery, forcing him to miss the first three T20Is against New Zealand and leading to his replacement by Shreyas Iyer.

Despite the recent surgery for testicular torsion and initial doubts about his World Cup availability, Varma remains focused on reclaiming his spot. Known for his versatility and reliability at the number three position, he offers Team India a unique ability to shift through different gears during an innings. His determined push through rehab suggests he is fighting to prove his fitness before the final tournament roster is locked in.

Tilak’s presence is expected to be vital for India’s top order during the upcoming World Cup. His statistical record is formidable, with 1,183 runs across 40 matches at an elite average of 49.29 and a sharp strike rate of 144.09. This tally includes two centuries and six fifties, underscoring his ability to anchor an innings while maintaining a high scoring rate.

His performance at the number three position has been particularly remarkable, drawing comparisons to Virat Kohli for his ability to seamlessly transition from stabilizing the innings to explosive acceleration. In 15 innings at one-down, he has amassed 542 runs at a staggering average of 60.22, striking at over 160. This prolific run at number three is highlighted by his career-best score of 120*.

Team India would hope for Tilak's speedy recovery with T20 World Cup 2026 fast approaching.
