Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh

Suryakumar Yadav of India drops a catch during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 match against Netherlands at Narendra Modi Stadium on February 18, 2026 in Ahmedabad, India.

Story Highlights:

India dropped two catches against Netherlands.

India's catching efficiency has been poor.

Former India fast bowler Varun Aaron did not mince his words as he criticised Suryakumar Yadav’s men for dropping two to three catches every game. After the Netherlands game where India dropped a couple of chances, Aaron went on to label it as the ‘worst catching team in last 12 to 18 months’. On February 18, Washington Sundar and Suryakumar Yadav dropped a catch each. Aaron hopes the problem doesn’t continue in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 stages followed by knockout clashes.

“Massive problem. India is by far the worst catching team in the last 12 months or maybe 18 months. Their catching percentage is below 70. Every match they drop at least 2-3 catches. I just hope that they don’t drop important catches come the Super 8 and the semifinals,” Aaron said in a chat on ESPNcricinfo.

In the 12th over, Sundar at backward point dropped Colin Ackermann's catch. In the final over, skipper Suryakumar and Rinku Singh were involved in a collision. There was lack of communication between the two while going for the catch. Both escaped the incident without any injuries.

Ten Doeschate on dropped catches

After India's 17-run over the Dutch at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate admitted that it is a concern for them. He assured that the players are working hard to improve their catching.

“Dropping catches is never great. We’re working really hard at it. But you don’t want to make a big thing about it. You want to trust the players to do the work. But often in T20, that is the difference,” he said in the post-match press conference.

“Particularly in the Super 8 phase, and we talk about the next phase, we’re going to come up against some really good fielding teams.”

India’s next game is against South Africa who have entered the Super 8 unbeaten in their group as well. The match will take place on February 22 at the same venue.
