Indian pacer Avesh Khan delivered his career-best performance in One-Day format to bundle out Baroda for a paltry 59 in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022. Avesh was clinical with the new ball for Madhya Pradesh as he preyed on under-pressure Baroda top-order. The stupendous bowling performance helped Madhya Pradesh register a win by a massive margin of 290 runs, their biggest win in List A cricket history.
It was Ashwin Das who drew first blood as Baroda had a target of 350 in front of them. Avesh struck in his third over with the wicket of Aditya Waghmode (9). In his next over, he got rid of Pratyush Kumar, trapping him in front of the stumps. In the ninth over, he got through Krunal Pandya’s defenses to send him back packing. The 26-year-old pacer followed it up with the wicket of Vihsnu Solanki. Baroda lost half their side for 34.
Skipper Ambati Rayudu became pacer Kuldeep Sen's first victim of the day. Avesh continued his assault and got the wickets of Bhanu Pania and Atit Sheth. Kuldeep struck again and spinner Kumar Kartikeya ended Baroda's sorry attempt at the run chase in the 18th over.
No Baroda batter could score in double digits. Surprisingly, there was only one duck in the dramatic collapse.
Earlier, Rayudu had asked Madhya Pradesh to bat first after winning the toss. Yash Dubey (58), Himanshu Mantri (60), Shubham Sharma (88) and Rajat Patidar's (52) half-centuries helped Madhya Pradesh post a mammoth total of 349/7 at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai.
Avesh made his last T20I appearance in T20 Asia Cup 2022 against Hong Kong where he leaked 53 runs from his quota of four overs. After multiple expensive spells followed by injury, Avesh was dropped from the T20I squad. He was not considered for T20 World Cup 2022 even as a standby bowler. Against South Africa in ODIs, he remained wicketless in three games and was dropped from the side.
So far, in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, he has taken 12 wickets from six games. His only disappointing performance came against Jammu & Kashmir where in a high-scoring match he took three wickets but leaked 86 runs.
