India's star pacer punished for breaching ICC's code of conduct during Women's Asia Cup final

India's star pacer Kranti Gaud was penalised 10 per cent of her match fee following a violation of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Women’s T20 Asia Cup final in Dubai on September 13. Officials cited a Level 1 breach under Article 2.5, which penalises the use of provocative gestures, actions, or language directed at a batter following their dismissal. Alongside the financial fine, one demerit point was added to Gaud’s disciplinary record, marking her first infraction within a rolling two-year window.

The disciplinary action stems from an altercation in the opening over of Sri Lanka's run chase. After being scooped for a boundary on the first delivery by opening batter Imesha Dulani, Gaud struck back three balls later to dismiss her attempting a similar shot. A fired-up Gaud celebrated the wicket by aggressively signaling toward the pavilion, prompting match referees to step in after the game.

Because match referee Supriya Rani Das presented the charges directly and Kranti Gaud accepted the proposed penalty, the matter was resolved without requiring a formal disciplinary hearing.

India claimed a record-extending eighth Women’s Asia Cup crown with a dominant 72-run victory over Sri Lanka in Sunday night's final in Dubai. The decisive win served as payback for India's setback against the same opposition in the 2024 final and marked their sixth Asia Cup final triumph over Sri Lanka across formats—a rivalry dating back to India's 5-0 sweep in the inaugural two-team tournament in 2004.

A dominant display with both bat and ball sealed the championship for India. Powered by a historic 129-run opening stand between Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, India set a daunting target of 183 for 5. The bowling unit then systematically dismantled the Sri Lankan lineup, bowling them out for 111 in 19.4 overs behind a four-wicket haul from Shree Charani and three wickets from Deepti Sharma. Player of the Match honors were awarded to Verma for her explosive performance at the top of the order.

Pakistan face ICC's music too

In a separate ruling from the tournament's knockout stage, the Pakistan women's squad incurred a five percent match fee deduction for falling behind the required over-rate during their semi-final match against Sri Lanka.

When accounting for standard time stoppages, officials determined that Pakistan was one over short of their designated target as Sri Lanka chased down 131 in 18.4 overs. Fourth umpire Rabab Ahsan formally reported the infraction, and Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana accepted the fine without dispute.
