Sherfane Rutherford and Andre Russell shone as the West Indies clinched a 37-run victory over Australia in the third T20I at Perth Stadium, securing a consolation win in the series. WI have claimed their first T20I win over Australia Down Under in a decade. Their sole previous T20I victory against Australia on Australian soil occurred precisely a decade earlier. West Indies secured a 20-run win over Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. The West Indies now tally two wins in eight T20Is against Australia in Australia.
How the match unfolded?
With nothing to lose, the Caribbean team came out with aggressive intent. Opting to bat first, the visitors faced early trouble, finding themselves at 17 for 3 in just 2.5 overs. However, Rovman Powell and Roston Chase steadied the innings with a 57-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Unfortunately for the West Indies, both batsmen fell in quick succession, leaving them at 79 for 5 in 8.4 overs. From that point onwards, Rutherford and Russell not only rescued the visiting team but propelled them into a commanding position.
Combining for a partnership of 139 runs, Rutherford and Russell guided the West Indies to a formidable total of 220 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Russell, despite suffering a blow to his helmet from a vicious bouncer by Spencer Johnson early in his innings, aggressively attacked the Australian bowlers, reaching his fifty off just 25 balls.
Russell particularly punished Adam Zampa, scoring 19 runs off one over, eventually finishing with a blistering 71 runs off 29 balls, including 4 fours and 7 sixes. Meanwhile, Rutherford remained unbeaten on 67 runs off 40 deliveries, featuring 5 fours and an equal number of sixes.
David Warner's heroic efforts go unrewarded
The task of chasing down the target was always going to be formidable for Australia, and they faced relentless pressure throughout the innings.
Mitchell Marsh and David Warner provided the hosts with a quick start, forming a partnership of 68 runs for the opening wicket in just 6.3 overs.
Following Marsh's departure, Warner accelerated to reach his half-century off 25 balls. However, he found little support from the other end as the required run rate continued to rise.
Warner amassed 81 runs off 49 deliveries, including 9 fours and 3 sixes, before falling victim to Chase's bowling.
Tim David contributed a brisk 41 runs off 19 balls, featuring 2 fours and four sixes, but it only served to prolong the inevitable. Chase emerged as the standout performer with the ball, finishing with remarkable figures of 4-0-19-2. Despite Warner's valiant efforts, Australia could only muster 183 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.
