Mohammed Siraj, Roston Chase

India's Mohammed Siraj (R) celebrates after taking the wicket of West Indies' captain Roston Chase (L) during the first day of the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 2, 2025.

Story Highlights:

Jasprit Bumrah bowled two booming yorkers to uproot stump.

Mohammed Siraj missed out on his maiden fifer at home.

Lack of application, throwing bat at the ball away from the body and helpless against Jasprit Bumrah’s booming yorkers. West Indies were bowled out for 162 within two sessions on Day 1 of first Test at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Mohammed Siraj took four wickets as West Indies batters failed to put up a fight in the first innings of series opener, not learning from their record low at home against Australia.

Bumrah, Siraj get the new ball talking

Earlier, Roston Chase won the toss and opted to bat first. The only milestone a Caribbean batter reached on Day 1 was John Campbell completed 1,000 Test runs. In his second over, Siraj found an edge off Tagenarine Chanderpaul's bat. He departed for an 11-ball duck. After a few overs, Bumrah found his length. Campbell edged one to Jurel. It wasn't given out at first but the ultraedge showed a clear spike. Brandon King hit a few boundaries before his misjudged leave led to middle stump going for a walk. Siraj continued and got the wicket of Alick Athanaze who got caught at second slip trying to slash one square of the wicket.

Kuldeep breaks partnership on return

Skipper Chase and Shai Hope looked to do some damage control. Towards the end of first session, Kuldeep Yadav was introduced into the attack. Hope was outfoxed by a flighted delivery. He got bowled by the wrist spinner playing his first Test in almost a year. He scored 26 runs from 36 balls. West Indies lost half the side for 90 in the 24th over heading into the lunch break.

Lower order struggles

After the lunch break, Siraj ended Chase's stay at the crease. He played down the wrong line and edged one to Jurel who took the catch comfortably. He scored 24 runs from 43 balls. Justin Greaves got an early reprieve as his catch was dropped by Rahul off Washington Sundar's bowling. West Indies' oldest debutant since over five decades in Tests, 34-year-old Kharry Pierre tried to survive but was trapped in front of the wickets by Sundar's fuller delivery. The left-handed batter scored 11 runs from 34 balls.

Bumrah’s yorkers steal the show

Bumrah bowled an unplayable ball to a well-set Greaves, reminiscent of the one he bowled to Ollie Pope which was played in Coldplay concerts. Greaves couldn't do anything about it and walked back to the pavilion. He top-scored for West Indies, scoring 32 runs from 48 balls. In his next over, Bumrah uprooted the stump again. The yorker was too good for young debutant Johann Layne. Jomel Warrican and Jayden Seales tried to frustrate the pacers. Then, Gill introduced Kuldeep and Warrican got out trying to play a reverse sweep. West Indies were bowled out for 162 in 44.1 overs, a disappoint total after opting to bat first.
